Inventory : Delivery Overview
The purpose of this document is to show you how to create and manage Delivery Methods, Shipping Connectors, Delivery Products, and Delivery Packages within Odoo's Inventory application.
Delivery methods allow you to customize delivery preferences like shipping costs which can be given a flat rate or calculated dynamically based on rules like the weight of the package or the total amount spent by your customer and allows you to manage any geographic restrictions for your shipments.
Shipping Connectors build on the functionality of Delivery Methods by allowing you to integrate with 3rd party carriers and customize your Delivery Methods to your selected carrier's specifications for things like packaging, service type, label formats, and to get dynamic shipping costs.
We will conclude this document with a workflow example of adding a Delivery Method to a Sales Order.
To get started, navigate to the Inventory application.
Good to Know!
Delivery Methods, Delivery Products, Shipping Connectors, and Delivery Packages can also be modified in the Sales application. Any changes made to these items in one application will be reflected in the other.
Once on the settings screen, you will need to select at least one Shipping Connector from the available options shown below. We will configure these shipping connectors later on in the document. Please select all carriers that you use for your business.
When ready, click SAVE.
You will be prompted with the below options to create your Delivery Method.
Name: Allows you to give your Delivery Method a specific name for reference.
Provider: Allows you to set the pricing that will be used for this shipping method from various sources. We will only cover Fixed Price and Based on Rules right now, because we will go over the 3rd party carrier set up in the next section.
Fixed Price: This gives you the option to set a fixed shipping cost for all orders that this Delivery Method is applied to.
Based on Rules: This will allow you to set specific rules for your shipping costs based on weight, price, quantity ordered, volume, and weight * volume. For example, you could set your rules so that, if an order contains more than 5 units and the price is over $200, then that customer gets free shipping.
Install more Providers: Takes you to a page where you can install additional logistics provider modules and Shipping Connectors.
Margin on Rate: Allows you to set a percentage of increase over the calculated shipping rate.
Free if order amount is above: If checked, you can set an order price that if reached, will give your customers free shipping.
Delivery Product: Delivery Products are used for internal accounting purposes. By having an associated Delivery Product with your Delivery Method, you can track how many times a Delivery Method is used. Delivery Products also add a line item to all orders that use the associated Delivery Method for accurate billing of the shipping costs.
We will go into detail about how to create Delivery Products below.
Pricing Tab: This is where you set the price and pricing rules for the Fixed Price and Based on Rules options above.
Destination Availability Tab: This is where you can restrict your shipments to certain regions by country and state or zip code.
Delivery Products are accessed by the associated dropdown menu within any Delivery Method.
On any selected Delivery Methods page, click the dropdown menu next to Delivery Product. In this dropdown menu you will see all of the Delivery Products that have already been made as well as the preconfigured Delivery Products that came along with your selected Shipping Connector(s).
From the dropdown menu, select Create and Edit....
On the next window, you'll have the options to configure your Delivery Product.
In the below screenshot you'll see that the tabs we have are General Information, Sales, Purchase, Accounting. If you do not have the same tabs as we do, it is because you have different apps installed on your Odoo database.
Setting up Delivery Products is the same as setting up any kind of product. You can review our product creation guide here.
Once we land on the Delivery Methods page, we will see all of the pre-built Delivery Methods in the system for the Shipping Connectors we activated. Select a Delivery Method from the list.
On the next page, click Edit.
To get started with connecting your selected carrier's account with Odoo, navigate to the Configuration Tab, fill in the necessary account details, and follow any instructions listed.
Integration Level: This option allows you to choose how much of the shipping process will be handled within Odoo.
You can opt to just get shipping rates or you can opt to get rates and then create a shipment as well.
The other options shown to the right of the account details section under the Fedex Configuration tab are specific to the Fedex shipping connector. These options are specific to each carrier, but generally they will determine what kind of packaging you will use, allow you to set delivery preferences, the format you want your labels created in, and the type of shipping service you would like to use.
Once you have your Shipping Connector activated for a carrier and you create a Delivery Method, you will have the option of switching between a Test Environment and a Production Environment for that carrier.
While testing your connection and making sure that your preferences are correct, you should be in the Test Environment. Once you are ready to start processing live orders or doing testing in a live environment, you can switch to Production Environment.
To toggle between the two environments, just click the Test Environment/Production Environment button on any Delivery Method that you are editing. If you are on Test Environment, a single click will put you on Production, and vice versa.
Generally, your test credentials and your production credentials from the shipping provider will be different. Please contact your shipping provider to receive both sets of credentials.
The carrier you have selected will have all of their packaging codes available for you if you use their default packaging for your shipments.
If you would rather use your own packaging, you can use the custom carrier code designed for the purpose of allowing you to input the specifications of your own packaging.
Not all carriers have a custom packaging code. If they do, you will see it in the Default Package Type dropdown menu.
For example, the code for Fedex is FEDEX_YOUR_PACKAGING.
Once you have have that packaging code selected, click the icon to input your specifications.
On the next pop-up window, only modify the fields highlighted below in pink.
Do not modify the Package Type, Carrier, or Package Code and do not input any measurement symbols like like " or ' into the Height, Width, or Length fields. Input the dimensions in Inches.
Good to Know!
It’s not uncommon to need multiple packages that are your own custom dimensions. In this case, you can have multiple package types that use the same custom packaging code. Set the package name to something identifiable by your team and ensure the Package Code is configured per the shipping provider's requirements.
Delivery Methods Workflow: Sales Orders
Adding a Delivery Method to sales orders is important for tracking and receiving the correct amount of money from customers for their shipping costs.
To get started, navigate to the Sales application.
From the main screen, click Create.
On the next window, you'll be prompted to input the terms of the Quotation. One option is to select the Delivery Method that you would like to use for the order.
Once you have a Customer inputted, a Delivery Method chosen, and a Product on the Quote, you can click on Get rate
This example used shipping costs calculated by Fedex. The process is identical if you use a Delivery Method with Fixed Pricing, Pricing Based on Rules, or set by another carrier. You simply get the rate and then add it to the order.
